Parents;

IF your child has taken the End of Course Exam in US History, Biology or Geometry, please note the following important information:

The state guidance for handling the Biology and Geometry EOCs for this year’s 9th AND 10th graders will be that the scores will not count as 30% of their final year-long course grades or as pass/fail for either class.  This decision about how the rule will be written in support of SB 1076 applied to students in high school only and does NOT apply to students in middle school.

No current 10th grader sitting in BIO or GEO will have their semester 1 grades pulled into a year-long record and combined with an EOC grade.  Instead, they should receive a regular second semester grade and credit/no credit based on their second semester final grade average of their 3 6-week grading periods (these students already have a first semester final grade and ½ credit recorded if passed.)

You should have already done your Bright Futures Application in December! If you did, you have a log on and password, and will hear from Bright Futures via email. You should have also done your FAFSA form online with your parents as well. You will NOT get any money or scholarships, if you have not filled out these forms.

Even if you feel that you do not qualify, you should still fill out the forms, as other scholarships come from this application process as well.  If you are not sure if you have completed this form, please see your guidance counselor.

You can also visit the Bright Futures website at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org for more information.

Revamped district Newsroom will debut May 13

On Monday, May 13, the district will launch a new and improved version of the district’s “Newsroom,” an online resource accessible from the district’s website that features information of interest to PCS families and employees. The Newsroom is updated daily and includes video news and feature stories about district events and initiatives as well as positive news about the accomplishments of students and staff.

The revamped site has been redesigned to be more user friendly and aims to be a “go to” source for providing timely, accurate information. You can find the link for the Newsroom on the top navigation bar of the district’s website (www.pcsb.org), or you can go to the Newsroom directly at http://newsroom.pcsb.org/.

Efforts continue to educate families about transition to Common Core State Standards

The district has launched a Common Core Web presence aimed at informing families about Common Core State Standards.  Pam Moore, Executive Director of PreK-12 Core Curriculum, worked with Communications Coordinator, Lorri Helfand, and district Webmaster, Eirrin Sustaita, to create the pages which can be accessed from the homepage of the district’s website.

 https://www.pcsb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3489&Itemid=1845

The Web presence includes numerous resources, including background on Common Core, videos, and specific information just for parents that defines Common Core State Standards as what students in kindergarten through 12th grade should know in English language arts and mathematics. Pinellas implementation has already started in kindergarten and first-grade classrooms and in second-, sixth- and ninth-grade reading/language arts classrooms.

The literacy standards are also being implemented in social studies/history and science classrooms, and in other technical subjects.  The Common Core State Standards will be fully implemented in all grades during the 2014-15 school year.

East Lake High School's PTSA is looking for 3 board members

East Lake High School's PTSA is looking for 3 key board members for the next school year...President, Treasurer and Secretary.  The PTSA is a vital part of ELHS community. They not only sponsor events like College Night, Flight Night and Service Leaning Night (companies needing student volunteers for Bright Futures hours) and Teacher Appreciation Week.  PTSA's existence guarantees that our booster clubs are covered by the required insurance, which is vital for our sports teams.

We are in real need for volunteers to fill these positions and more.  By just giving a few hours a month you can ensure that PTSA and Boosters continue at East Lake High.  Contact Mrs. Kovacs at 727-942-5419 x2025 if you are interested in supporting our PTSA in any way.

New School Hours for 2013-2014 school year

Pinellas School Board members approved school opening and closing times for the 2013-14 academic year at the Feb. 12, 2013 School Board meeting. Beginning in August 2013, the student day at our school will begin at 7:05 a.m. and end at 1:35 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Please note that “early release Wednesdays” have been eliminated, a decision that was finalized in September 2012 when the School Board approved a contract with the Pinellas Classroom Teachers Association.
